Collection Officer "Chain of Custody" Training

Correct sample collection and completion of paperwork are crucial to the process of drugs and alcohol testing. It forms he basis of what is known as the "Legally Defensible Chain of Custody". ScreenSafe UK provides a fully trained, insured and competent Collection Service via our own (non sub-contracted) Nationwide team of Collection Officers.

However, some of our customers choose to use their own staff (or Occupational Health nurses) to attend drugs and alcohol testing sessions to complete the paperwork and take/test the sample etc. ScreenSafe UK therefore offer a half day Chain of Custody training and Product awareness course to certify delegates in the processes required to ensure legal defensibility using ScreenSafe UK testing products and equipment. This course is aimed at groups ideally up to 10 persons (although more can be accommodated on request).

Course Aims:

Delegates will become aware of:

  1. The type of drug testing employed by their employer / company / organisation.
  2. The need to perform a legally defensible drug and alcohol test.
  3. The processes and equipment involved in taking a breath and oral fluid and/or urine sample.
  4. The requirements of a robust and concise Drug and Alcohol policy.

Course Objectives:

At the end of the course, delegates will be able to:

  1. Correctly interview a donor and record the required data using the supplied ScreenSafe UK Chain of Custody forms.
  2. Perform a legally defensible Alcohol breath screen test using the Drager 6510/6810 breathalyser or similar.
  3. Read and record Breath test results, recognising where further testing may be required.
  4. Prepare a toilet facility for urine sample collection.
  5. Perform a legally defensible Drug screen test using the ScreenSafe UK TestRite™ urine or SalivaCheck© for on site screening.
  6. Read and record a negative/presumed positive result from the ScreenSafe UK TestRite™ urine or SalivaCheck© for on site screening.
  7. Split a urine/oral fluid sample into and A and B sample (using the ScreenSafe UK Laboratory confirmation kit), complete paperwork and prepare ready to send to the ScreenSafe UK laboratory services for confirmation.

Some customers carry out all testing themselves (with the full support, product and services of ScreenSafe UK) or some customers carry out some testing themselves and then call in our Collection Officers to attend critical and/or "out of hours" situations.

Whatever you decide, ScreenSafe UK will train, advise and support you along the way.

Competency Assessment/Management

ScreenSafe UK also provide a service aimed at competency assessment and competency management of "third party" collectors. We advise that competency assessment should be undertaken at least once every 12 months. Ensuring that your staff are competent is crucial in the audit trail to maintain legal defensibility, especially where results or practices are challenged.
