Oral Fluid / Saliva Point of Care
Firstly, it should be noted that oral fluid and saliva are not the same thing. Saliva comes from numerous glands lining the mouth, while oral fluid consists of saliva plus many other fluids such as sputum from the lungs and throat, and nasal drainage etc.
Drugs will permeate the body, irrespective of whether they are ingested, snorted or swallowed. So any oral fluid can be used for drug testing, not just saliva. Oral fluid is very close to blood serum, so if it's in the oral fluid it's in the blood. And of course if it's in the blood it's in the brain too, and so the drug impairs the person. This view is becoming more widely considered as a test for actual impairment by drugs, just as it is with alcohol detection.
ScreenSafe UK's SalivaScan device is a rapid, one step screening analysis for the simultaneous, qualitative detection of multiple drugs and drug metabolites in human saliva/oral fluid.
The SalivaScan device works in a very similar way to the urine "Point of Care" device, but can test for a smaller range of drug types. Results are screening results only and any "non negatives" will require lab confirmation for quantitative results. We would recommend that all "positives" at screen stage are sent for confirmation analysis using our ISO17025 (UKAS or European equivalent) accredited laboratory service. Confirmation results are reported within 5 working days from receipt at the laboratory (or less if Fast-Track is requested).
